Tha Pale Mountains
The Dolomites, a majestic mountain range in northeastern Italy, have a rich and storied history when it comes to climbing. For centuries, these awe-inspiring peaks have attracted explorers and mountaineers from around the world, their rugged beauty and challenging terrain providing an unparalleled climbing experience. The history of climbing in the Dolomites dates back to the late 19th century, with the first recorded ascent of a Dolomite peak, Punta Penia on the Marmolada, in 1864. The region saw a surge in mountaineering activity in the early 20th century, a period that also witnessed the tragic conflict of World War I, when the mountains became a battleground and troops built paths and via ferratas - some of which are still used by climbers today. Post-war, the Dolomites grew in popularity as a climbing destination, attracting renowned climbers like Emilio Comici and Riccardo Cassin, who established many of the classic routes. Today, the Dolomites are recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site and continue to be a mecca for climbing, with thousands of routes that cater to climbers of all skill levels, each promising a taste of the region's rich history and stunning natural beauty.
